Pasay City West High School spikers defended its crown against the netters of Pasay City East High School (PCEHS) during the championship game of men’s volleyball in straight sets 25-8, 25-10 and 24-26 held in Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary school gymnasium on Jan. 8, 2019.

The mighty Westians displayed their dominance early in the first set. With Bryan Rivero manning the net and Rafael Celebrado giving outstanding set plays, Janjan Alfabete and this year’s most valuable player Louie Suarez were able to attack the opponent’s defense. The first set ended in a lop-sided win of the PCWHS,25-8.                                   

Westians kept their momentum in the second set. PCEHS failed to break into the defense of the defending champion while finding no answer to the killer spikes of Alfabete and Suarez. East players however were able to find their groove during the last set forcing a deuce against West team. But West players showed their composure led by the team captain Ralph Lawrence Fregil. The team is now bound to compete in the Regional level. The team’s coach Mr. Anjo Mari Luciano could not ask for more from his ward as they have fulfilled their mission of defending the school’s crown.

With Miles Celebrado ineligible to play, Westians banked on Jose Angela Ubalde Meanwhile, the girl’s volleyball team settled for third place. With the departure of former MVP Miles Celebrado, Westians banked on Jose Angela Ubalde and Airish Malaga. With this year’s experience, Coach Evelyn Aguilar hopes that team can bounce back next year and finish on top once again.

Apart from Suarez winning the MVP, other Westian players were recognized for their skills. They are: Rafael Celebrado, best setter; Bryan Rivero, best middle blocker; and Alfabete, best outside spiker. In the girl’s division, Malaga and Ubalde were named as best libero and best outside hitter respectively. Mr. James Remyr Alimpuyo is the trainer of the team.
