In compliance wih DepED Order No. 28, s. 2018, Pasay City West High School launches its Oplan Kalusugan (OK) sa Deped on July 24, 2018 at the school gym.

          As what DepEd requires, the whole day event featured the department’s five major health programs – School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP); National Drug Education Program (NDEP); Adolescent Reproductive Health Education (ARH); Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in schools; and medical, nursing, and dental services.

           Dr. Myrna B. Gaza gave the opening remarks. The principal explained the importance of cleanliness and proper hygiene. After her talk, four different speakers took turns in sharing their knowledge in health, sanitation, hygiene, and drug education.

          The first speaker was Mrs. Maria Victoria Ronan, Home Economics teacher who discussed how a particular student qualifies to the SBFP. The teacher said that the students’ height and weight which the class advisers have recorded during the first week of the school year is the basis in identifying the recipient of the program. According to her, those students whose BMI (computed from the students’ height and weight) will fall under wasted and severely wasted category will be included in the program.

Thereafter, Mrs. Filipinas De Guzman, the school nurse announced the social development and the formation of the school based program “Barkada Kontra Droga”.According to Mrs. De Guzman, the said program will target female students with menstrual problems. This will allow the said students to gain proper information about menstrual issues and that proper medication can be given to them. She added that the program also aims to help students in avoiding HIV and other form of STI’s or sexually transmitted infection.

The next speaker was Dr. Anita R. Atienza who shared some information about STI. The assistant principal disclosed on gonorrhea, herpes, genital warts and human papillomavirus. To stressed her point, Dr. Atienza showed the pictures/graphics of the STI’s and for each picture the students reacted disgustfully saying “yucks!”, “nakakadiri!”.

Then, SPO2 Bernardo C. Ostan lectured about the National Drug Education Program (NDEP). The police officer explained the difference between regulated drugs and prohibited drugs. He also gave a brief lecture about the effects of drug addiction to the body. Likewise, law enforcer clarified the process when one is caught with cigarette inside the school and even outside the school as long as it is within the 100-meter borders of the school. He also presented some refusal strategies that students can use in order to say no to drugs and tobacco. After his talk, SPO2 Bernardo received a plaque of appreciation from Dr. Gaza. Then, the school head announced that a random drug testing will be done and those who will be tested positively will not be persecuted but will be given proper help by the authorities.

Mr. King Alfred Sy and Mrs. Mildred Romamban emceed the event. PCWHS Chorale with Mrs. Chrismarilene R. Cabataña led the singing of the National Anthem while the Angklung Ensemble with Ms.Juliet Brioso renderd the Pasay March. Miss Gina Mendoza did the invocation.
