Day 1, July 10, started with Dr. Gaza’s discussion the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and the four career stages. The principal stressed that under DO No. 42 s. 2017, teachers’ performance will be evaluated using the PPTS instead of the National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS). According to the principal, “The PPST can be used for the selection and promotion of teachers as performance appraisals for teachers shall be based on this (PPST) set of standards.”

The school head also explained the four career stages of teachers – Beginning Teachers, Proficient Teachers, Highly Proficient Teachers, and the Distinguished Teachers. Dr. Gaza pointed out that Teachers 1-3 are classified as proficient teachers because they have gained the qualifications for entry into the teaching position and are expected to be professionally independent in the application of skills vital to the teaching and learning process. She further said that Master Teachers are classified as highly proficient teachers who are expected to consistently display a high level of performance in their teaching practice. Likewise, the principal emphasized that the adoption of PPST, teachers’ Result-based Performance Management System (RPMS) is now gauged with the standards based on PPST. The first day ended with Ms. Socorro Domingo, Araling Panlipunan Department head lecturing on the Self-Assessment Tool (SAT).

Then the teachers filled up their SAT and their development plans. Each department was told to write an example of development plans on a piece of Manila paper which was posted on the wall and then checked and signed by. Dr. Gaza. The next session was done by Dr. Atienza who discussed the Classroom Observation Tool (COT). She stressed that all teachers must be observed four times a year as the COT’s will be one of the bases in the evaluation of the teachers’ Individual Performance Commitment and Review (IPCRF) form. She emphasized that the three observers should be seated apart from one another during the course of the classroom observation and that they (observers) are not allowed to talk nor to give any facial expression. Afterwards, Dr. Atienza and Mrs. Torres led the parallel sessions for COT for T1-T3 and MT1-MT4.
