To orient the teachers of the latest DepEd policies and the present school status, Pasay City West High School held its annual School-Based Summer In-Service Training last May21-24, 2018 at the school gym.
During the four-day event, school administrators discussed the various Department Orders issued by DepEd while teachers who attended trainings and seminars echoed the knowledge that they have gained from the said seminar.
On May 21, Dr. Myrna B. Gaza, the school principal discussed the DO No. 42 s. 2017 or the National Adoption of the Philippine Professional Standards for teachers. She reminded the teachers to observe professional standards at all times and that includes proper dress code – proper uniform from Monday-Thursday and civilian attire on Friday but jeans/shirts must be avoided. She also stressed the importance of maintaining professional relationship among the teachers. She said that differences cannot be avoided in a workplace but such differences must not hinder the teachers to work harmoniously.
The principal also explained the DO No. 3 s. 2018 or the Basic Education Policy. She particularly explained the Affidavit of Undertaking which parents have to execute in case they (parents) failed to submit their children’s SF 9 (formerly F137) before August 31 of the current school year. She told the teachers to make use of the said affidavit so as to ensure that parents and learners will comply with the submission of the documents that the DepEd requires from them.
Likewise, Dr. Anita R. Atienza, the school Assistant Principal talked about the DO No.36 s. 2016 or the Policy Guidelines on Awards and Recognitions for the K-12 Basic Education Program as well as the DO 29 s. 2017 or the Policy Guidelines on the Assessment in the K-12 Basic Education Program. Afterward, Mrs. Grace B. Torres, Assistant Principal explained the DO No. 58 s. 2017 or the Adoption of New Forms for Kindergarten, Senior High School, Alternative Learning System, Health and Nutrition and Permanent records. Mrs. Torres also discussed the DO No. 11 s. 2018 or the Guidelines on the Preparation and Checking of School Forms.
In the afternoon session, three English teachers shared the knowledge that they have gained from their trainings. Ms. Sherylin Azarcon focused on Conflict Management while Mrs. Myrna Pantoja and Ms. Cynthia L. Abarquez talked about Modular Assessment. Science teachers likewise shared their insights. Ms. Hazel Enerio made some clarification about Basic Robotics and Electronics. She explained that everyone is actually using basic robotics such as calculators, cell phones, remote control and the likes. Ms. Cora Fuentes discussed the Development of Assessment Materials while Ms. Cristina Singson focused on Inquiry-Based Approach in Teaching Science.
Later in the afternoon, Ms. Gloria Castillo echoed about The Use of Assessment to Improve Instruction for Science and Math Teachers while Mr. Rizaldo Isales shared some insights about Content Pedagogy for Secondary Mathematics. Then, Ms. Laarni Queen Britanico discussed what Sulat Mulat is.
The morning session of the third day focused on the Evaluation of School Achievement Level by Subject Area. Department heads showed the achievement level of PCWHS students for the last three years. This was followed by the Evaluation of School Performance Indicators done by Mrs. Nida D. Raagas, and Mr. Randy Delfino, Guidance Coordinators of Junior High School and Senior High School respectively. Ms. Cory Domingo, Department Head of Social Studies discussed the Social-Inquiry Based Social Studies Instruction. This was followed by Ms. Jocelyn Chinchilla’s discussion of the latest in ICT and LIS. Then, The Values Education teachers had a short lecture about Creating Safe and Caring Schools as well as Strengthening Positive Discipline in the Classroom. Lastly, Dr. Omar Aguilar and Ms. Juliet Brioso of MAPEH Department gave the teachers an opportunity to wiggle their body.
May 24 was allotted to the Senior High School teachers. Mrs. Yolanada M. Marinay focused on the English Language Skills for Teaching while Mr. Randy Delfino, SHS Guidance Coordinator talked about SHS Career Guidance. Finally, Mr. Mayorico Apelado convinced the teachers to be engaged in qualitative research.
