Pasay City West High School (PCWHS) experienced a rather intense moment on September 7, 2023, at 2:00 pm when a prolonged and loud alarm rang throughout the school premises. This unexpected occurrence prompted all students, teachers, and staff members to swiftly execute the “duck, cover, and hold” earthquake safety procedure.
The reason behind this orchestrated response was the school’s active participation in the 3rd Quarter National Earthquake Drill (NSED). The School’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management (SDRRM) team played a crucial role in organizing and overseeing the event. They collaborated closely with members of the PCWHS Red Cross Youth (RCY), the Batang Emergency Response Team (BERT), and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Officers.
As the alarm sounded, everyone within the school’s premises promptly evacuated their rooms and congregated on the school grounds, following established safety protocols. Notable figures present during this event included Mrs. Ivy A. Tanglao, who serves as the school’s Officer-in-Charge (OIC)-Principal; Mr. Ireneo T. Macaspag, the SDRRM Coordinator; Mr. Tolentino, the SDRRM Assistant Coordinator; and Mr. Nanding Rivera, President of the SPTA (School Parent-Teacher Association).
Macaspag and Tolentino took the opportunity to provide their perspectives on the drill’s execution and offer constructive feedback to improve future safety preparedness further. Mr. Nanding Rivera also shared his insights, adding valuable input to the overall experience.
The drill’s execution adhered to the guidelines laid out in the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Memorandum No. 090, dated August 18, 2023, and OUOPS No. 2023-04-1668, dated February 22, 2023, ensuring that the school was well-prepared to handle emergency situations and contribute to disaster resilience efforts in the region.
