The Alternative Learning System, also known as ALS, is a unique educational program implemented in the country, that gives opportunities to individuals who may have faced challenges in completing their formal schooling. One such received the privilege, is Angelika Olsen, a 19-year-old student from Pasay City West High School who went through the ALS program. Despite her participation in this specialized education, Angelika has proven that she possesses the drive and determination to forge ahead in life, no matter what obstacle she may encounter.
Even though Angelika undergoes special education to meet her academic needs, she has been actively participating in sports since elementary school. In addition, she pursued her education through the Junior ALS program at P. Villanueva Elementary School. Despite her struggles, she emerged as a remarkable athlete, securing a third-place finish in the 400-meter race and clinching the top spot as the first-place winner in the 4×100 Track and Field Competition. This accomplishment was the product of the DepEd’s Pre-National Qualifying Meet in the Regional NCR Palaro 2023 Paragames Athletics Competition, NCR Level, held from April 24-27, 2023. Angelika’s coach, Glenda Villacortes, a MAPEH teacher, guided the competition. The event took place at the Ultra Philippine Sports Complex in Pasig City.
In the face of her academic challenges, Angelika’s unyielding spirit is an inspiration for all of us. At just 19 years old, she stands for the fact that age and adversity cannot wither one’s determination and resilience. She refuses to let her position define her, her limits, or her potential. Despite her academic journey’s obstacles, she embraces her passion for athletics, which she has held since her elementary school years.
Angelica Olsen’s story is a powerful reminder for us that shows how courage knows no bounds and that the human spirit can overcome even the most formidable of challenges. Her achievements radiate as a light of hope, inspiring others to believe in their strength, no matter the obstacles they may face. Angelika’s story will remind us that even in the face of adversity, remarkable triumphs can emerge.
