Exhibit of innovation and learners’ output and performance in Science goes virtual last June 24-25, 2021.

Despite the pandemic and cancellation of face-to-face classes for the school year 2020-2021, Pasay City West High (PCWHS) managed to push through with its annual Science Expo beating the challenges these trying times.

Mr. Peter R. Cannon Jr., Principal of PCWHS welcomed the guests, science enthusiasts, learners and parents at their homes to the virtual Science Expo 2021. He said that the conduct of the virtual science expo is not just a manifestation of learners’ achievement but also a celebration of learners’ rich imagination to innovate and inspire other learners to learn at his time of pandemic.

Education Program Supervisor (EPS) in Science Dr. Maripaz T. Mendoza emphasized that it is a good thing that the Science Expo is pushed through despite the pandemic. This is a reminder of everyone’s love of science and a way to rekindle our interests and on what science can do to our lives. She congratulated the school administration and the technical working group for the success of the event.

The male faculty members of the Science department led the virtual ceremonial opening of the Science Expo through their play-acts of the challenges and coping mechanism of teachers in the new normal.

Lastly, Mr. Reymart A. Pucolangas, Co-Chair of the Science Expo 2021 enticed the learners and science enthusiasts as he presented the different booths, activities, and contests for the two-day event.

Themed “Imagine, Innovate, Inspire,” the Science Expo 2021 showcased the exhibits of students’ outputs and performances both from add-on subjects and regular science classes.

The Expo Highlights featured outputs of Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Consumer Chemistry and Basic Electronics and Robotics. Grade 7 STE learners presented Diversed and United by Pandemic and Virtual Eco-savers while Grade 8 showed the Past, Present and Future of Biotechnology in the New Normal. Likewise, Grade 9 prepared Edible Reactions: The Chemistry of Homemade Foods, and finally the Grade 10 completed Bits and Bytes of Electronics.

Students from the regular class organized the “Science Showdown,” which is composed of quarterly performance tasks. Amazing Earth Corners of Grade 9 students showcased volcanic features, how a volcano erupts and different types of volcanic eruptions using materials available at home. BIO-Mazing Work of grade 7 made their DIY Microscope using bottle or jar. Grade 8 stirred Up Chemistry at Home Funs and Grade 10 learner showed how color mixing as used in different forms of arts influence the moods, feelings, and emotions of people.

Learners were also inspired by the Sci-artist in Action with PCWHS sci-artist alumnus and vlogger Jestoni A. Rubantes who shared his expertise in Poster-Making as well as his colorful journey in the field of arts.

YES-O Participation in the Science Expo 2021

The partnership of the PCWHS Youth for Environment in School’s Organization (YES-O) made this year’s Expo even more exciting with their virtual contests and activities showcasing learners’ resiliency and means of coping up with the new normal resounding on the theme, “Accepting the New Normal Challenge: Redirecting Toward a Sustainable Future”.

Tik-Tok for a Cause highlighted the creativity of learners in writing a skit, dancing, and acting through the app TIKTOK while helping and inspiring others to be savers of the environment and Humanity).

The Virtual Spoken Poetry contest allowed the learners to voice out their thoughts and feelings regarding the issues with mother earth.

The viral plantitos and plantitas also became part of the exhibit dubbed as Westians Plantito Y’ Plantita.  The booth implied that gardening is more than an interest because it gives way for a psychological experience, and it also serves as a means of connecting with nature

Lastly, Tie Dye Chem Fashionista took the learners’ artwork to the next level as they create, learn and strike a pose by their DIY tie dyed shirt.

During the closing and awarding ceremonies, the Department Head of the Science and Technology Department, Mrs. Eva E. Sabarillo, stressed that no variant of virus can stop the science teachers to conduct the exhibit and to continue motivate and inspire learners to innovate, discover and learn even at the time of pandemic.  She commended the active contribution of the competent learners to make this year’s expo possible.

Rubantes donated a drawing pad as the grand prize for the raffle. Also, thirty-one lucky learners received 100-peso worth load card during the event’s raffle.

Lastly, Mrs. Sheryll P. Delos Puyos, Chair of the Science Expo thanked all the persons behind the success of the event. She also commended the support of the school administration to make virtual science expo possible.
