With the theme “Pagkakaisa para sa Handa, Ligtas at Matatag na Paaralan tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan”, the campaign kicked off in all the public schools in the country on May 28, 2018. This six-day event aimed to bring together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute their time, effort, and resources by making schools environmentally-sustainable and conducive to learning for the opening of the school year 2018-2019.
Pasay City West High School and its stakeholders joined the said National Schools Maintenance Week. The school invited people from all walks of life. Hence, LGU leaders, barangay officials, alumni, and private stakeholders came over.
The school started the event with a parade which passed through Pasadeña St., F.B. Harrison St., Arnaiz Ave., Park Ave, and Galvez St. Dr. Myrna B. Gaza, the school principal; together with Dr. Anita R. Atienza, assistant principal; and Mrs. Nida D. Raagas, the guidance coordinator led the parade. GPTA officers gave their support. Together with the school administrators, they paraded within the PCWHS vicinity carrying their tarpaulin.
Banging their drums, the school’s boyscouts signalled the start of the parade.
They happily walked on dragging the heavy drums with them. Despite this, the boys remained energetic all through out the activity. Somehow, the sound of their drums has helped in promoting a light and festive atmosphere amidst the hot day.
Likewise, teachers from the different departments of the school came carrying their respective tarpaulin. Everyone was in high spirit as they exchanged their sweet smiles and warm hellos. Some even shared their umbrealls and fan. They were sweating much but the happiness could still be seen from their faces. The event became not only a day of working together but also a way of building camaraderie among the teachers.
Apart from the teachers, other volunteers came and supported the event. There were students, alumni, parents, GPTA officers, barangay officials and others. Even the 4 P’s recepients contributed to this wonderful cause. A proof that even those who lack the financial aide can still give something to the community. They simply need to have open arms and golden hearts.
Since it was a cleaning and maintenance activity, volunteers arrived with the necessary materials. Female participants were armed with various cleaning things like broom, rags, mop, pail/dipper, etc while the males brought construction items such as hammer, nails, saw, etc. Employees of some companies chipped in gallons of paints, sanitizing kits, and packed meals. A number of entities sent manpower to repair and clean the school facilities and amenities.
Volunteers enlisted in the registration area in front of building B. Officers of the student body manned the said enlistment. The program was then held in the school gym. Dr. Myrna B. Gaza gave the opening remarks. In her speech, the principal explained the role of the community in the improvement of the public school system. She stressed that Pasay City West High School needs the support of the parents and stakeholders in order achieve a conducive learning environment.
Members of Pasay City Council dropped by at the school gym to show their support in Brigada Eskwela. Right after the Flag Raising ceremony in front of Pasay City Hall, the councilors went to PCWHS at once hence, they were still dressed in their traditional Barong. Being public servants, such attire did not stop them in joining a cause such as this.
Anklung Ensemble and the PCWHS chorale led the singing of the national anthem, doxology, and Pasay March. Ms. Juliet H. Brioso and Mrs. Chrismarilene R. Cabataña are the moderators of the said Ensemble and Chorale respectively.
The winners of the Song Writing Contest with the Chorale and Ensemble sang the Brigada Eskwela Jingle. The school Dance Troupe which was trained by Dr. Omar Aguilar interpreted the song. Mrs. Arlene Joy T. Jacob, Brigada Coordinator and Mr.John Francis L. Octaviano, Assistant Brigada Coordinator, gave the specific tasks to each department. Mr. King Alfred D. Sy and Mrs. Ma. Gina P. Bituaran emceed the event.
