The metro-wide earthquake drill also aims to promote preparedness among Manila residents for a possible 7.2 magnitude movement of the West Valley Fault. Organized by Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Council (MMDRRC) and managed by Metroplolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the drill was coordinated with the barangays, government offices, schools, churches, businesses, BPO’s, and mall operators to ensure the widest participation. Along with the #MetroShakeDrill is the Oplan Metro Yakal Plus – the contingency plan of the MMDRRMC which details the protocols and procedures that would take place in the event of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The said plan calls for Metro to be divi- ded into four quadrants capable of responding to the disaster independently. The four quadrants are as follows: North: Calookan, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, San Juan, Valenzuela; East: Marikina, Pasig; South: Las Piñas, Makati, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Pasay, Pateros, Taguig; and West: Manila, Malabon, Navotas. Every barangay of each quadrant has a DRMMC that has charge over risk assessment and contingency planning, funded by the local disaster fund. Raagas, the Subject Area Heads, namely Dr. Eduardo Wong, Dr. Anita Atienza, Ms. Lucy Monton, and the GPTA President Mr. Fernando Rivera together with the GPTA Officers and the Junior and Senior High School teachers.
Unexpectedly, it is very interesting to note that there were eight hundred ninety three (893) parents attended the assembly representing the group of parents in all the grade levels. This only showed how parents value the education of their children and actively participate in school activities. The Parent Assembly started at 8:00 in the morning with an invocation and National Anthem recited and led by two Senior High School Teachers.
The principal discussed the current situation of the school including its performance and accomplishment through the School Report Card. The School Report Card presents a clear image of the school’s profile on enrollment, health and nutritional status of children, learners’ materials, teachers’ professional development, funding sources, and awards/recognition of the school.
Included are the indicators of performance as to access which includes drop-out rate and the causes of drop-out. Promotion rate, achievement rate and literacy level comprise the quality of students while governance of the school include School-Based Management, Child-Friendly School System, stakeholders’ participation, learner-teacher ratio, learner-classroom ratio, learner-toilet ratio, learner-seat ratio.
The Parent Assembly was focused on the three improvement areas of the school which need to be implemented because these can have an impact on the schools’ achievement and retention. These are the decreasing result of the national achievement test, the increasing drop-out rate and the reading ability of the students. School programs, activities and projects were also explained by the principal at the parent assembly.
The role of the parents in the implementation of all the programs of the school can be crucial to achieve success and improve the learning outcomes of the students. The parent assembly can be a powerful mechanism for the school to effectively communicate with the parents as stakeholders of the school.
