Pasay City West High School put into use the numerous drills that it has been doing for the last five years when a 6.3 magnitude quake hit NCR last Aug. 11, 2017.
`The shaking happened at around 1:30 in the afternoon. When the students felt the tremor, they immediately did the drop, cover and hold as they waited for the shaking to stop. When the quake was finally over, they hurriedly went down to the school ground in less than five minutes. There were no reported injuries. The students were sent home at 2:00 pm although the administrators, teachers and a few students stayed in the campus to witness the turn-over ceremony of the LED bulbs from the office of the Vice-President. A month before the said earthquake, the school had joined the nationwide earthquake drill on June 30, 2017, at 9:00 am for the morning session and at 2:00 pm for the afternoon session.
Themed “Bida ang Handa”, the students did the drop, cover and hold exactly when the bell rang before rushing down to the school ground to settle themselves. Class Presidents and monitors were tasked to do the head count. Members of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) Boys Scout/Girls Scout of the Philippines(BSG/GSP),Campus Integrity Crusaders (CIC) and Red Cross Youth were also present to give assistance. They served in the monitoring team, communication team, crowd control team, rescue team, and sweeper team.

With the objective of letting the students learn the German language through music Goethe Institut did a seven-day German singing workshop which kicked off at Pasay City West High School gym last Aug. 14, 2017. Present in the event are German representatives Sandro Jahn and Marie Christine Lucie Charlotte Banga; Ms. Grace Torres Panganiban, OIC-Language Coordinator Goethe Institut; Dr. Myrna B. Gaza, principal; Dr. Anita B. Atienza, the school assistant principal; Mrs. Nida D. Raagas, Guidance Coordinator; Miss Lucy Monton, MAPEH Department Head, Mrs. Veronica D. Miranda, OIC-Head, English department; Deutsch teachers Mrs. Jenelyn Bareng, Mrs. Lilibeth Dela Rosa, and Mrs. Raquel May Basa; and Deutsch learners from grades 7, 8, 9 and 10.
The two Germans taught the PCWHS Deutsch learners their selected music. At the end of the four-hour- program, the learners presented their own German music to the guests. A group of boys from Grade 10 Scarlet rendered their own version of the song learned from the workshop followed by Vivien Cuapat from Grade 8 Mangga, who sang the theme song of the movie “Moana” in Deutsch.
To participate in youth oriented activities like cultural shows, acting workshops, theatre arts, film showing, fieldtrips, and gender development forums, the CCP Arts Education Department, with the help of the Society for Cultural Enrichment, Inc., brought the students and teachers of Pasay City West High School to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) to watch the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Youth Concert with Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura.
The activity was held at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater), last August 24, 2017. It was attended by 32 Grade 11 students, 47 Grade 12 students under Humanities and Social Sciences track. Faculty members who served as guide were Mr. Jo Carlo Navidad, Mr. Alex Ian, Mrs Rosan Beboso, Ms. Liezel Clemente, Mrs. Ma. Gina P. Bituaran, and Mr. Mayorico Apelado. Mrs. Grace Torres the Senior High school Assistant principal was also there to supervise the said immersion as one of the activities in the immersion program of the department .
Before the concert, the students were gathered at the Silangan Hall where they were given a Pre- Symphony Orchestra Orientation by the Arts Department of CCP. After the brief orientation, everybody was directed to proceed to the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino to witness the musical prowess of Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura, Musical Director/Principal Conductor for the PPO ( Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra). In between gaps, Herminigildo Ranera, narrator, gave an animated introduction of various Orchestra Instruments to the Young audiences. Each of the 4 families of the orchestra played their distinct sound to which the learners indulged inquisitively. Joaquin Maria “Chino” Gutierrez, a promising Filipino violinist, also performed a very moving classical piece together with the PPO.
Following the concert, the PCWHS learners and Faculty were all given a sumptuous lunch. The activity ended with a sharing of students’ positive reception of classical music and a heartwarming consciousness of the importance of such immersion in developing their art appreciation of classical music amidst the emergence of popular music and the technological advance of the 21st century.
The author wrote a rueful musing of the pleasures and pitfalls along the road of life, that for the most part vocalizes the adage that it is the journey that matters. This is an apt message for more than 400 seniors who will leave our school in a few months to brave their way through the next step in their academic journey; college.
To fully prepare the students for what will come, immersions for different strands was administered. They were sent to partner companies and institutions to learn the ropes of their future careers. However, to assure both the parent and the student, a Pre-Immersion Orientation was conducted.
The Pre-Immersion orientation program took place as a culminating activity for all Grade 12 among different tracks on August 26, 2017. As a form of guidance, the PCWHS Senior High Administration Office and Faculty collaborated to arrange a series of talks about various skills like resume writing and proper interview etiquette. It is an effort made by the school to assist perplexed students and parents about DepEd’s new initiative to gear the students up with the necessary skills and competencies for all kinds of occupations, among other things. They provided information about the immersion for parents as well, with different forms of presentations and incentives.
The program started at 7:00 in the morning. Everyone was excited to see the resource persons as they sat down near the platform. Some were even formulating questions for some schools that thy already held interest in. After few minutes of technical preparations, the program begun. The national anthem and an opening prayer was played. After this, Mr. Mayorico Apelado gave remarks about the importance of awareness.
After the opening remarks, Asst. Principal Mrs. Grace Torres took the stage. She explained to the parents the concept of immersion and how will it be administered with regards to their child’s strand. She described how they will be considered qualified to undergo the immersion and how whey will be placed with partner companies and institutions.
After that, the PCWHS faculty administered the talks. Various teachers from the PCWHS faculty gave speeches on various necessary skills required by corporations and institutions. Unexpectedly, Dr. Evangeline P. Ladines, DepEd-Pasay Superintendent, arrived to supposedly check on the Open High School Saturday session. But apparently, to her surprise a Pre-Immersion Orientation was being conducted during that time. She commended this act of the PCWHS Senior High School administration and greeted the grade12 students and their parents.
Hence, the orientation was cut for the mean time to give way to the distribution of report cards for the first quarter. Then the students were asked to go back after the lunch break to continue the Pre-Immersion Orientation. At the end of the program, certificates were given to the attendees, which serves as a recognition that they have accomplished the first step before the actual immersion.
Samantha Nollora of Grade 8-Mangga won first place in the Singing Idol, SPFL Chinese Mandarin Regional Festival of talents held on Sept. 19, 2017 at Neptali Gonzales High School, Mandaluyong City.
With her victory, Nollora is now qualified in the National Festival of Talents to be held in Dumaguete City come February 2018.
The contest is part of the annual activity of the Special Program in Foreign Language festival which gives the students an avenue to best show their knowledge and skills in all learning areas. With this activity, the learners can showcase their talents through exhibition of their performances as evidence of their learning. The festival further aims to strengthen and upgrade the students’ level of competence and confidence and foster camaraderie through healthy and friendly competitions.
Joining Samantha in the said contest were her trainer Mrs. Celia L. Singcol, and the Pasay City Education Program Supervisor in English Mrs. Imelda V. Boquiren.
Mayor Antonino Calixto and Congresswoman Emi Calixto-Rubiano joined the teachers of Pasay City in the Division Teachers’ Day celebration held in Cuneta Astrodome last Sept. 27, 2017 at 3:00 pm. Present in the event were Dr. Evangeline P. Ladines, Pasay City Schools Division Superintendent; Dr, Melody P. Cruz, OIC-Assistant Schools Division Superintendent; Education Supervisors; elementary and secondary school principals; and public school teachers.Themed ‘Gurong Pilipino Kaakbay sa Progreso”, the event featured several activities in honor of the teachers. Numerous prizes were raffled for the teachers to wit: cash gifts, rice cookers, TV sets, and refrigerators. Teachers were also treated for a free dinner. Emcees of the event were Ms. Concepcion M. Macapagal and Mr. Raygeinald P. Villacorta.
Earlier on that day, the school had done its own celebration of teachers’ day in PCWHS gym. The occasion begun with a mass followed by a short program. Some teachers who have been in the service for more than 30 years were given certificate of recognition. They are: Ms. Evelyn Rato,(MAPEH) (42 years), Mr. Perfecto Bobis, Jr. (TLE Dept. Head), Mr. Alejandrino De Vera, . (TLE Dept.) Ms. Elizabeth Enerva, (THE Dept.) Ms. Susana Cunanan, (AP Dept.) and Mrs. Yolanda Mojica,(MAPEH) (35 years), Mr. Roberto Sandajan, ,(MAPEH) Ms. Evelyn Aguilar ,(MAPEH) Ms. Teresita Pamplona, (THE Dept.) and Ms. Rowena Tablada, (AP Dept.) (30 years).
Raffles were given to a number of lucky teachers. The celebration ended with a boodle fight where teachers feasted on various foods that they prepared. Dr. Myrna B. Gaza,PCWHS principal gamely joined the fun as she hopped from one table to another and had a taste of the foods that each department had prepared. Mrs. Ma. Gina P. Bituaran and Mr. John Francis C. Octaviano emceed the event.
A philanthropist who chose to keep his identity secret sponsored the free blood type testing of 400 hundred Senior High School students and a number personnel of Pasay City West High School last Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017 at the school gym.
The golden-hearted donor did the said act in collaboration with Philippine Red Cross-Pasay City Chapter. The said donor who happened to be a friend of Mr. Nick Macaspag, the head of School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, paid for all the needed materials for the said testing such as syringe, alcohol, and cotton. According to Mr.Macaspag, his friend did the said act in accordance with the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross which are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
Public high school students from Pasay took over the Pasay city hall under an apprenticeship program organized by the Pasay Youth Development Council as part of the annual Boys and Girls Week held in Pasay last November 27 to December 1.
The five-day even began with Mayor Antonino G. Calixto and Congresswoman Emi Calixto Rubiano, with the city councilors welcoming the participants from the seven public schools of Pasay City: Kalayaan National High School, Pasay City East High School, Pasay National Science High School, Pasay City North High School – Tramo, Pasay City North High School – M. Dela Cruz, Pres. Corazon C. Aquino National High School, Pasay City South High School and Pasay City West High School.
Pasay Youth Development Council Chairperson Adrian Martinez introduced the Boys and Girls 2017 delegates and the guest of honor YESPH Ambassador Jose Sixto Dantes III aka Dingdong Dantes. He introduced the draft Ordinance: 10% Discount Food Purchase for the Working Students to Councilor Joey Calixto Isidro and Councilor Mark Calixto. Congresswoman Calixto, Councilor Joey Calixto-Isidro, and YESPH Ambassador Dingdong Dantes gave a pep talk to the participants.
The second day was held at the Division Office at Padre Zamora Elementary School where DepEd Usec Tonisito Umali gave a short speech. Mrs. Leuvina D. Erni, Division Education Program Supervisor for Araling Panlipunan discussed the history of Pasay City while Ms. Socorro C. Domingo, AP Department Head of PCWHS talked about drug addiction. Then, PYDC Chairperson Adrian Martinez shared his insights and experience being a Youth Leader. After the discussions, the delegates were divided into two parties and then election of the little officers followed.
Three SSG officers from PCWHS won and were designated as little City Councilors. They were: Hannah Kristel E. Austria, Maria Aveghail P. Lising and Erwin Rempone Jr. Marjorie R. Zuñiga was assigned as the little Department Head of Human Resources and Management Office.
The Clean Up Drive and Tree Planting Activities was held on the third day. PYDC Chairperson Adrian Martinez, PYDC Councilor Lesley Anne C. Rubiano, City Councilor Joey Calixto Isidro and the event’s partner JCI Perlas Pasay; EVP Lish Mendoza who donated the plants.
The Little City Officials visited Avellana’s Art Gallery at The Henry’s Hotel Manila and were able to meet and talk with the owner Mr. Albert Avellana.
On the 4th day, the participants took their five-hour duty at their respective offices. Some Little City Officials saw an actual hearing at the session hall.
The last day of event was highlighted by lighting of the Pasay City hall. Timoteo Paez Teachers Choir performed the song Kumukuti-kutitap.
